24-hour MRT strike looms

Medical radiation technologists, including those in Southland, will up the ante on their industrial action with a complete strike on September 7.

There are about 25 technologists in Southland who perform tests such as x-rays and ultrasound.

They have been involved in "low-level industrial action" for the past two months.

Yesterday, in reaction to the suspension of MRT staff by the Counties Manukau District Health Board, the Association of Professional and Executive Employees said it would be withdrawing all MRT services for 24 hours.

Association spokeswoman Robyn Slater said the suspension had been met with outrage by technologists throughout New Zealand.

"The only reason why DHBs are suspending us is to bully MRTs into accepting what is an unacceptable offer. MRTs are not going to be bullied," Mrs Slater said.

Up until now all MRT staff had remained at work and treated patients while working to rule (taking their entitled rest breaks, refusing offers of overtime and so on), she said.

"This has been the preferable course of action, rather than undertaking a total strike or complete withdrawal of labour."

The union confirmed that life-preserving services would be maintained by MRT staff throughout the strike on September 7.
