Thousands gathered at the 2010 Rice's Powerstore Expo yesterday for the first of the three-day event, Powerstore general manager Craig Balfour said.

The numbers were normal for the first day of the annual event, he said.

"We are very happy with the first day ... Huge numbers through."

He said 3-D televisions had proved very popular.

People had been spending their money on more expensive items this year rather than the door-busters, he said. Three 63-inch TVs were sold in the first two hours.

Opposition business Bond and Bond manager Jeff Vincent said the expo was positive for them.

"People are out shopping and people like to shop around ... It's good for us."

He said they were doing a big interest-free offer this weekend, and that it had been busier than a normal Friday.
