An Invercargill woman paid an unscheduled visit to her neighbour last night after her car smashed through a wooden fence and a brick wall to end up embedded inside a house.
Constable Brent Kingsland, of Invercargill, said a 79-year-old woman reversed her car out of her garage on George St, went straight across the road and came to a halt in the middle of her neighbour's lounge about 6.30pm.
The driver was checked by St John Ambulance staff and other than being "extremely shaken up" was unharmed, Mr Kingsland said.
The car, a Ford Mondeo, had to be pried from the demolished brick wall of the house by a tow truck.
Tyre marks could be seen on the floor of the woman's garage.
A witness told police the car narrowly missed another vehicle travelling down the street as it darted across the road.
The 87-year-old woman who lived in the house that was hit was in the kitchen at the time, well out of harm's way, Mr Kingsland said.
She was also shaken by what happened, he said.
Police would be speaking to the driver but only after she had time to recover from the shock of what happened, he said.
