A broken-up pleasure boat was found in Thompson Sound after an emergency beacon was activated this morning.
A Maritime New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre spokeswoman said Southern Lakes Helicopters was called when the beacon was detected just after 11.00am, and a broken-up 6 metre pleasure boat had been found with no-one on board.
She said the three men who had been on the boat were ''holed up in a hut'' and were not on the boat when it happened.
It had been reported the boat had broken from its mooring, but the spokeswoman could not confirm this.
The listed emergency contact for the boat said three men aged in their 60s had been on board.
