Insurance rejection upsets woman

A Tapanui woman due to shift to Christchurch this weekend has been shocked to discover her insurance company will not provide household contents cover.
However, New Zealand Insurance Council chief executive Chris Ryan said yesterday a stand-down period for new policies, after such a major natural disaster, was standard practice.
Lisa Turner was to have started moving house in preparation for a new job but her insurer AMI yesterday informed her they would not provide cover and to check again in a fortnight.
Mr Ryan said it was normal procedure to have a short-term delay for new policies so there was no confusion.
People moving to Christchurch should either leave their possessions behind, if possible, or store them somewhere they can be insured, Mr Ryan said.
Miss Turner said she had not thought transferring her existing policy would be a problem. She had got insurance cover from another company.
