DEBATABLE: It seems entertainer and mayoral hopeful Suzanne Prentice isn't keen on the idea of head-to-head debates with incumbent Tim Shadbolt.

Invercargill mayoral challenger Suzanne Prentice appears to be avoiding head-to-head debates against Tim Shadbolt before next month's local body election.

Ms Prentice said yesterday she would not engage in a mayoral debate with Mr Shadbolt and mayoral challenger Carl Heenan on Cue TV next Wednesday.

She had made prior singing arrangements in Blenheim and other dates proposed by the television station also clashed with engagements, she said.

When it was suggested voters had a right to see how she would fare in the heat of political debate prior to the election, she said the mayor's role was not to debate issues in the council chamber.

"The mayor is there to control that meeting, he isn't there to debate."

However, Mr Shadbolt said yesterday he believed the mayor couldn't just chair council meetings; mayors had to state their views on issues because people wanted to know what they thought.

Ms Prentice said she believed head-on mayoral debates were not beneficial to anyone, including the people of Invercargill. Meet the candidate evenings were better forums to get her message across because she could outline her views and answer questions from the floor. She was not ruling out engaging in head-to-head mayoral debates with Mr Shadbolt altogether, saying she had been asked by a radio station to debate issues with Mr Shadbolt next week. But any decision she made around mayoral debates would depend on who was running it, how it was structured and where it was held.

In July, Ms Prentice told The Southland Times she was undecided about featuring in any mayoral debates with Mr Shadbolt because his debating skills might be stronger than hers.

She said yesterday debates did not show the candidates in the best light.

"People get more idea when they are listening to what you have got to offer in a far more civilised manner."

She was available to answer any questions from the public if they wanted to contact her, she said.

Mr Shadbolt said it would be a great disappointment if Ms Prentice did not engage in a public television debate with him prior to the election.

It was the accepted way leadership candidates campaigned around the world and voters needed to see how they reacted on the spot, he said.

Politicians often had to debate issues with other politicians outside of the council chamber.

@ Fact's Please #7

Grammar please. If you are going to post a comment about how ignorant everyone else is and how bad some journalism is, at least run the spell check over your post and learn about the appropriate use of apostrophes (or does your fact own a please?).

I almost stood corrected there..... for a moment. If the World Vision series of dates has been known for 12 months, (Comment #7) then why oh why would she have NOT indicated that at the time the debate was being scheduled.... ? At a guess... because it providing an easy out? Ya can't have it both ways, I think that's called "Fudging"

Ignorance is bliss isn't it. Amazing how people suddenly know Suzanne's business. Why don't you actually 'inform' yourselves before making statements that are totally untrue ? Oh that's why....that would mean you would all know the truth. Have a look at the World Vision website and you will see where Suzanne is performing for the next few months, I understand these bookings, in most cases, are made more than 12 months ahead, did CUE TV try to book Suzanne 12 months ago ?? If I was Suzanne I wouldn't debate under the structure of anything CUE TV arranges, never has there been a more amature, poorly run excuse for a broadcasting organisation. If they got themselves some descent journalist's, they might actually get some viewers instead of people who only watch their channel for the 'cringe value'. I notice you ignorant beings haven't made any profound statements regarding the interesting issue of Shadbolt offering Ms Prentice the Deputy Mayors position in return for her not standing against him at election time. I wonder why that is.....must be because you can't defend the indefensible. You sad, sad, sad ignorant people. Vote for Tim, I'm sure Suzanne wouldn't want scumbags like you all voting for her anyway.....Shadbolt's more your level.

Flip...... Flop... with the emphasis on "Flop" I can tell you that CUE TV juggled dates for their debate to suit Suzanne's schedule..... and, gosh oh golly.... suddenly she's not available due to a "Prior" booking??? What rubbish. Sadly the little girl with the big guitar has turned from a contender to a total lightweight in the Mayoral race. I have a $10er that says Carl Heenan will come within 10% of what Suzanne polls.... purely down to the fact that all these No Shows will mean exactly that, for her. I reckon Angie's comment (#2) will sum up a lot of voters feelings.

Any candidate for public office must be seen and heard! Prentice's weak spine is typical of her attitude which proves her life of privilege and false smiles is set to continue. She can never ever control a group of errant councillors.

Some people say,"dopey/knuckle draggers/too cool for school/laid back/country hillbillies, old fashioned, & more about the people, about the way business is run here & about the perceptions they have of us down here. We are an alternative culture people who live in a timezone dictated by logistics. Yes we are english speakers,we are also blessed with having talented people here who are able to work bloody hard at anything they put there mind too,be that as a labourer a beneficiary or manager or policeman or printer, the diverse range of applicable options for growth is there, what is not there is....the jobs needed for people to have that expendable income to spend in shops or to expand there company,it has not come from Tim Shadbolt expertise at what?being a mayor. Time for change is now,as a Tepukian I value people from the color of whats in there heart to achieve an outcome to improve there lot in life, there is a culture here in Invercargill, indeed in Southland that is not the same as anywhere else,it is very attractive as an investment in any form as the results exceed anywhere else in this country given the capital invested. Expectations on old fashioned systems cause us to forever go round in cyrcles repeating the same old mistakes & getting nowhere so for many other reasons as well it would be wise to vote for the next level of investment that we need down here,we need a person with a magnet personality that is reflective of our good nature & the ability as a role model that women & men can achieve anything if given that opportunity.

Love to know what is meant by healthy debate. Shadbolt has travelled far and wide on the debating circuit so I do not consider that a TV debate would be a fair playing field. Having done over fifty shows around New Zealand and overseas with McCormick last year no doubt we would be subjected to the same old patter which has been his trademark for goodness knows how long. What is the point of a debate between Shadbolt and Prentice - he freely admitted that he didn't have a clue when first voted in as Mayor up in Waitemata but obviously his memory has dimmed when it comes to some true opposition. To offer the Deputy Mayoral position to Suzanne way back in December shows an indisputable sign of panic that he was about to be overthrown. "Time for a change" to someone local, married, moralistic, ladylike and refined and with genuine concern for the ratepayers of Invercargill.

This is such a cop out! I had tickets to that debate and was really excited to see what she had to bring to the table. Singing songs about the 3 Bins isn't enough to get you in to the official robes Suey. Her current mayoral campaign demonstrates that she is not strong enough to lead but maybe to be an apPRENTICE. Tim for the Win!!!

She won't debate Tim on TV, but will on radio. Why is this?I'm affraid to see her in a mayority position if she can't even front up on telly to a healthy debate with Shadbolt, what sort of mayor is she really going to be for this city.I see her slogan is "time for a change", a change from what Suzanne? If the knife's not cutting, we're not going to replace it with another blunt knife.
