Customers at Queenstown's SBS Bank can grow their own herbs and vegetables as part of a seed giveaway the bank started last week.

The bank's business development manager Honor Mathieson said the idea sprung from another staff member's gardening success story. "The idea grew after one of our banking consultants grew a vegetable plot last year.

"She really enjoyed her organic produce and watching her daughter tend the garden," she said. The branch is now giving away 950 seed packets "until they're gone".

As well as getting the seeds to grow, customers can also arrange a place to plant them if they do not have space at home.

"Our team will be taking applications from locals to join the Queenstown Harvest Community Gardens, which is based on the English allotment system, and allows anyone to have a garden in a shared and supportive environment," Ms Mathieson said.

It's a great healthy lifestyles idea. One would hope SBS is helping it's own staff achieve healthy lifestyles and not just using this as a PR gimmick.

Good work Honor with helping our carbon footprint. Those poor Queenstown retailers though... he he.
