A Southland business is digging deep to come up with a $250,000 donation to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.
New Zealand Aluminium Smelters announced yesterday it would donate the money towards the Christchurch Mayoral Relief Fund to help support businesses and residents following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit in the early hours of Saturday.
General manager Ryan Cavanagh said the smelter was keen to contribute to the work of rebuilding infrastructure and supporting the community.
"Our employees are very concerned about the residents of Christchurch and the damage to their homes and places of work as most of us have family and friends in the region that have been affected," he said.
Further money was being raised by smelter employees through optional payroll deductions and would be available in the next couple of weeks, he said.
