Need for split services highlighted

Saturday's earthquake highlights the risk of having vital South Island-wide services, like neurosurgery, centred in one location, a Christchurch man says.
Hamish Piercy, in a letter to The Southland Times, said it would be "a true mistake to place all our eggs in one basket".
He said if the quake had struck at any other time of the day, the neurosurgeons would have been in demand and if the hospital was "rendered unusable" they would not be available.
Invercargill man Dave Edwards also wrote to The Southland Times, saying that if the earthquake had been any worse "a neurosurgery unit based in Dunedin would save many lives for (the Canterbury) region".Southern District Health Board chief executive Brian Rousseau said there were few specialist services based in only one area.
