Hawea Flat School ambitious fundraising project to build and auction a house was on target, parents, teachers and children attending an onsite sod-turning ceremony were told.
The Hawea Flat School Future Trust released news of the Timsfield Homefront Project, which will mean the school reaps the net proceeds from the house sale, two months ago.
Volunteer project manager Peter Teal was confident the house would be completed by Christmas in time for a Waitangi weekend auction.
Trust chairwoman Lindsey Schofield said about 30 sponsors had come forward to provide a range of products and services covering all aspects of the build.
"Parents and the local community have also been awesome with their support and we have been inundated with offers of help of both skilled and unskilled labour."
About 25 people watched trust patron and longtime Lake Hawea resident Dick Cotter turn the first sod on Tuesday after a ceremonial blessing of the section.
Mr Cotter, 73, said all six of his children had attended the Hawea Flat School.
"This is a real step up from fundraising in past years, we used to hold a bring and buy sale," the former school committee chairman said.
Board of Trustees chairman Dave Roberts said the new project would pull the community together even more.
