Invercargill will host the New Zealand Halal Slaughtermen Union's seventh annual meeting today, with between 30 and 50 members from throughout the country expected to attend.

The union is made up of 191 halal slaughtermen, who kill animals at meat processors in accordance with halal regulations so the meat can be exported to Muslim countries.

A spokesman said a celebration was also planned to mark New Zealand winning the Halal Journal Award, the first non-Muslim country to achieve this. The union nominated the New Zealand Food Safety Authority for award, which recognises New Zealand as having the best halal system in place.

The estimated annual value of the New Zealand halal industry was about $800m, including $250m in meat and $400m in dairy products, he said.

The union's role is to represent the religious and working rights of New Zealand halal slaughtermen, as well as training.mark.hotton@stl.co.nz

Cool story bro   #4   01:03 pm May 03 2011

"Why must animals suffer to appease some deluded idea of religion?" Killing without stunning was done for years and years not just by the Jewish lol you anti-semitist. And you can't tell me 'halal' isn't done by a deluded religion. With slaughtering the 'halal' way, all that matters is that the stunning of the animal doesn't kill it. The tradition is to cut its throat. Kind of like what they do when someone shames a family and ones then wants to take the life of that someone in a arab market or street. Hmm also they don't stun woman before stoning them. I digress. Anyway yes animal cruelty is bad but people come before them. When I go out deer stalking I don't pray before shooting, it doesn't have to face mecca, its not stunned, I gut it, then provide some good tucker for my family and friends.

I have no problem with Halal slaughter, at least the animal is electricaly stunned before bleeding. What I DO have a problem with however is the Jewish method, that forbids any stunning of the animal beforehand. Why must animals suffer to appease some deluded idea of religion?

Most of the countries don't want to see "halal" on their meats anyway. Its stupid, needs to be abolished. We shouldn't have to bend over for this lame middle eastern way anyhow. Meat is meat, it chopped up and cooked - DONE!

Mataura don't do this anymore since its no longer a requirement in the countries in which its products are exported to.
