Heavy rain leaves Alexandra properties flooded

Southern fire services responded to more than 30 calls related to flooding in Alexandra township, in Central Otago on Saturday night.

Fire service southern communications shift manager Andrew Norris said heavy rain between 9pm and 10.30pm resulted in flooding at a range of residential and commercial properties. 

Fire engines from Alexandra and neighbouring Clyde pumped water from the properties.

There were no evacuations he was aware of, Norris said.

MetService meteorologist Marilyn Avery said Alexandra was deluged with 31mm of rain, with 24mm falling between 7-8pm. 

Alexandra remained showery on Sunday, she added.
