A Southland man was named second-best dairy trainee in the country at the weekend.
While Canterbury entrants dominated the New Zealand Dairy Awards, at the weekend, Southland farm assistant Robert Ankerson, 23, was second in the Dairy Trainee of the Year category, while a farming couple from Tapanui were third in the Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the Year section.
James and Helen Hartshorne, who studied agriculture in Britain and came to New Zealand in 2000, are 50 per cent sharemilking 540 cows at Tapanui.
In the Farm Manager of the Year category Hannes and Lyzanne du Plessis (Southland) won a merit award for human resource management.
The winners were announced in Auckland on Saturday. Results:
NZ Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the Year:
Enda and Sarah Hawe (Canterbury/North Otago), 1; John Butterworth (Central Plateau), 2; James and Helen Hartshorne (Otago), 3.
NZ Farm Manager of the Year:
Mick O'Connor (Canterbury/North Otago), 1; Thomas White (Waikato), 2; Paul and Amy Koppens (Auckland/Hauraki), 3.
NZ Dairy Trainee of the Year:
Nathan Christian (Canterbury/North Otago), 1; Robert Ankerson (Southland), 2; Michael Shearer (West Coast/Top of the South), 3.
