Heated comments appeared on The Southland Times Facebook page in response to yesterday's article on abortion services at Southland Hospital.
Yesterday, the article had 45 comments from 25 people, in support or in opposition to the service beginning at Southland Hospital in July.
One commenter wrote that it was a medical procedure and should be available to Southland women without the hassle of travelling – "There should be no moralising about abortion".
Others worried that having abortion services available would lead to an increase: "People get abortions for the stupidest reasons and now it's going to be easier for them to do."
Most commentators voiced their own opinion but added it was a personal decision. "It's a very very personal choice and no one has the right to judge ... it's about time it was available here."
