Rural kids given farm safety message at awareness day

Isla Bank and Central Southland Rural Primary Schools took farm safety awareness to a whole new level this week.
The schools, in conjunction with the Drummond branch of Rural Women, held a farm safety day at the Drummond Rugby Club on Thursday.
Central Southland Rural Primary School principal Christine Munro said the children had learned about safety in and around the home during social studies.
So when Rural Women approached the school about holding a day featuring different safety activities for the children, the school was happy to come on board, Mrs Munro said.
About 115 children across both schools took part, learning about a wide range of safety issues from farm machinery to first aid.
The children were split into groups and spent about 25 minutes learning about each topic.
"It's been really good for them and they have enjoyed it, too," she said.
Drummond Rural Women president Eunice Roberts said farm safety was important for rural children to learn because it was an issue they faced every day.
Mrs Roberts hoped the event would be held annually and include other schools in the district.
