Miss Otago, Monique Cooley from Queenstown placed third runner-up in the Miss Universe New Zealand pageant, held last night in Wellington.
The 22-year-old beauty therapist spent a week in the capital during the build up to the competition, and was the only South Island contestant. Miss Cooley's roommate during the week-long pre-pageant build up, Avianca Bohm, who represented Auckland suburb Howick in the competition was crowned Miss Universe New Zealand, and will represent the country in Miss Universe 2012, to be held in December.
Pageant co-owner Donald Trump is yet to make a final decision on the venue.
Late last week Miss Cooley said that she had made a life-long friend in Miss Bohm.
