Councillor Darren Ludlow has won the Invercargill deputy mayoralty.

All councillors except Carolyn Dean, Ian Pottinger and mayor Tim Shadbolt voted for Cr Ludlow at this afternoon's council meeting.

The debate was strong and started early, after Mr Shadbolt told councillors he wanted newcomer Cr Dean for the job.

However, his recommendation was defeated and Cr Neil Boniface nominated Cr Ludlow instead.

Mr Shadbolt had earlier told councillors he wanted someone who would back him on key issues.

Cr Ludlow had let him down before, he said.

However Mr Ludlow also had his supporters, some of whom held signs saying Ludlow For Deputy Mayor, sitting in the public gallery.
