Minister of Education Hekia Parata was in the south on Thursday.

Education minister Hekia Parata has visited a Gore school which has been recognised by the government for its good work.

Parata visted Longford Intermediate on Thursday as part of a wider visit to schools in the Clutha-Southland electorate with its MP Todd Barclay.

They met with principal Shona Hewlett and other senior staff  and Board of Trustee members, with Parata praising the school on its recent success in being named the only South Island finalist in the Prime Minister's Education Excellence Awards.

The school was a finalist in the Excellence In Teaching and Learning category.

The school had looked at the strengths and needs of its students and teachers and decided improving students' writing was a year-long goal. Staff took part in professional development and used expertise within the school to upskill teachers - leading to accelerated progress for students.

Parata also visited St Peter's College, also in Gore, and Tokomairiro High in Milton.
