Bottle store makes way for function centre
The Kelvin Hotel bottle store is to close to make way for a new hotel meeting and function room.
The development is part of an upgrade of Chances bar at the hotel, which includes a new entrance, where the Lollie Shop is situated.
The Lollie Shop will move to a larger premises in Cambridge Arcade.
Invercargill Licensing Trust general manager Greg Mulvey said the bottle store would not be relocated and patrons could buy takeaway bottles of wine from Chances bar.
Mr Mulvey told a trust board meeting this week that engineer time constraints meant the upgrade would now be broken into two separate projects. It was not ideal but it was practical, he said.
The change meant there was now the potential for two contractors to tender for the job, he said.
An application for building consent was being processed by the Invercargill City Council for the meeting room, he said.
Pricing for the meeting room project was also under way.
The Chances bar upgrade had also been delayed as the trust waited on structural details of a concrete block wall, which would be removed.
The project, which was originally expected to be completed in March, had previously been delayed because of a shortage of engineers in the city.
