Southern firefighters have returned to the scene of an early morning fire in Riverton.

Firefighters from Riverton, Thornbury, Wallacetown, Colac Bay and Invercargill were called to a fire in Riverton at 1.50 this morning.

A fire communications spokesman said five appliances responded to an alarm at the premises of a fish and chip shop on Palmerston St.

The fire spokesman said there was a real concern the fire would spread to the petrol station next door.

Firefighters are believed to have been at the fire for several hours and have returned this morning to dampen hot spots.
