Invercargill police yesterday arrested a 30-year-old Christchurch man in relation to the indecent assault of a young girl in Te Anau 10 years ago.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Bowman said in 2002 a man unlawfully entered a house in Te Anau and assaulted a seven-year-old girl asleep in bed there. This girl was a visitor staying at the house, Mr Bowman said.
Forensic evidence has now linked the man to the incident through DNA and he is to appear in the Christchurch District Court next week facing charges indecent assault on a girl aged under 12 and burglary, Mr Bowman said.
Invercargill police were pleased to finally have a result in this historic matter, which at the time caused much unrest within the Te Anau community, Mr Bowmansaid.
