A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Southland last night but Southlanders did not appear to notice.
GNS Science said the earthquake struck at 7.39pm, 160km west of Tuatapere and at a depth of 33km.
Commenters on the Southland Times Facebook page last night said they did not feel the quake.
