A 50-tonne crane which toppled while working at Milford Sound has been successfully salvaged.
The crane, owned and operated by Smith Crane and Construction, was working from a barge as part of an upgrade of Freshwater Basin on Wednesday when it tipped over.
There had been initial fears fuel and oil on the crane could spill into the water, and Environment Southland had prepared for a clean up, however no spill occurred.
The crane was winched back on to its tracks today, after the crane boom was removed and the barge stabilised.
Maritime New Zealand and Department of Labour are investigating the incident.
