A man is to appear in court after the Invercargill armed offenders squad was called to a city house on Saturday evening following a domestic incident.
Senior Sergeant Dave Raynes, of Invercargill, said a distraction device was used before officers entered the address in Wilfrid St.
A loaded firearm was found at the address and a 40-year-old Invercargill man, later located at a different address, was taken into custody.
He will appear in Invercargill District Court today to face serious charges.
No-one was injured in the incident.
Onlooker Karissa Best said she had not heard anything before police arrived but later heard "gunshots".
Police kept onlookers away from the site.
The armed offenders squad was at the scene for "quite a while", she said.
