Lex Beal and Brian Sheppard were among about 10 people who spent six hours picking up two and a half trailer-loads of rubbish along the bay near Tiwai on Saturday.

Mr Sheppard said the cleanup covered several kilometres, starting at Tiwai bridge and heading towards Tiwai and across the bay towards Greenhills. The volunteers were picked up in and dropped off from boats.

The Bluff Hill/Motupohue Environment Trust volunteers, of which Mr Beal and Mr Sheppard are foundation members, enjoyed a remarkable day of sunshine while going about their work. Two Environment Southland staffers were also involved, Mr Sheppard said.

Most of the rubbish collected was plastic bottles and other plastic materials.
