James Hargest College student Tina Wei, 15, and Southland Boys' High School student Jake Henderson, 17, will be representing Southland in Japan in the next six months, as a result of top results in the Language Perfect World Championships.

The students were two of only three gold award winners selected in New Zealand to go to Japan, through the New Zealand Institute of International Understanding Overseas Exchange Scholarships.

Tina - who leaves for her exchange tomorrow - said she was a bit nervous but excited about spending the next five months in Tokyo.

Jake said he had been to Japan once before, and would be doing 10 months in an area of the country that had not been determined yet.

He leaves in March.
