Firefighters rescue elderly woman from crashed car in Catlins ditch

Firefighters have rescued an elderly woman who crashed into a ditch in the Catlins.

Southern Fire Communications shift manager Andrew Norris said crews from Tokanui and Waimahaka were called to the crash on the Chaslands Highway at 3.03pm on Sunday.

The elderly woman had crashed into a ditch on the side of the road, Norris said.

The woman was suffering from chest pains. Firefighters were unsure if the pains were caused by hitting the steering wheel during the crash or it was a medical event.

Fire crews waited with the woman until an ambulance arrived, Norris said.
