Central Otago's principal rural fire officer Owen Burgess is warning people to take care during burn-offs after firefighters dealt with two out-of-control fires in the region this week.
Mr Burgess said people needed to check weather forecasts and be aware of wind before lighting a fire.
Fires should also not be unattended. It was likely the open fire season would be removed if it did not rain soon.
