A tramper who fainted on the Hump Ridge Track early this evening has been taken to Southland Hospital by helicopter.
Maritime New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre senior search and rescue officer John Ashby said a personal locator beacon, registered to Hiking New Zealand, was activated about 5.30pm.
The woman, who was located at the intersection of the Hump Ridge and South Coast tracks, also had hypothermia, Mr Ashby said.
A member of the party hiked along the track until they got cellphone reception and they were able to tell emergency services what the problem was, he said.
A paramedic was winched down to help the patient get to a spot where the helicopter could land.
The helicopter arrived at the hospital just after 8pm.
