A tramper who fainted on the Hump Ridge Track last night was taken to Southland Hospital by helicopter.

Maritime New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre senior search and rescue officer John Ashby said a personal locator beacon, registered to Hiking NZ, was activated about 5.30pm.

The woman, who was located at the intersection of the Hump Ridge and South Coast tracks, also had hypothermia, Mr Ashby said.

A paramedic was winched down to help the patient get to a spot where the helicopter could land.

The helicopter arrived at the hospital just after 8pm.
