Houses without power after fire
Residents have been evacated and six homes are without power after a fire in a large power box in Pomona St, Invercargill, tonight.
Invercargill senior station officer John Gilder said roads were blocked and residents from six houses were evacuated as a safety precaution.
''We just wanted to make sure nothing got out of control,'' Mr Gilder said.
It took three fire appliances and 12 firefighters from Invercargill and Kingswell stations about 30 minutes to put the fire out.
No one was injured, he said.
He expected the houses to be without power until after midnight.
Street lights were also out, he said.
The cause of the fire was unknown and the power company had been notified, he said.
