A German man trying to swim across Fiordland has called off his first attempt.
Arno Marten is believed to have set off from the mouth of Milford Sound on Wednesday.
According to his tracking device, he reached Sutherland Sound this morning, where he decided to call off the attempt.
Mr Marten intends to swim 300km through the sounds, on a route from Milford to Te Wae Wae bay.
The route includes 100km of hiking and climbing over the mountains which separate the sounds.
He has a small dingy with him to tow his backpack and supplies while swimming.
He reached Sutherland Sound yesterday but weather conditions made it impossible to swim.
He told followers on Facebook he had sprained his knee and his backpack needed repairing.
