Police have suspended diving at the site of the wreckage of The Governor.

But Western Southland sub-area commander Senior Sergeant Cynthia Fairley said today further dives were likely to be undertaken by the navy dive team in the near future.

Police and the navy had discussed the possibility of navy divers carrying out further investigative diving around the wreckage, which lay 2.5km off Yates Point in Fiordland.

A plan on how and when this would happen was yet to be developed and there was no exact timeframe, she said.

''It will be subject to the team's availability and weather and sea conditions.''

A search began for the boat on September 15, after it went missing while fishing in Fiordland.

On board at the time were skipper Kevin Cosgrove, 60, a former Bluff man, and his sole crewman, 16-year-old Nirvana Drew Reynolds.
