The Southland YMCA will find out this week if it, along with YMCAs across the world, has broken a new record after taking hundreds of shots at goal on the basketball court at the weekend.
Southland YMCA Recreation membership consultant Tony Hubscher said the record attempt came after the YMCA head office in Geneva, Switzerland, wanted to celebrate the fact YMCA invented basketball in 1890.
The aim was to get the largest number of people shooting hoops in one day across the world, on October 13, he said.
More than 400 people shot hoops in Invercargill on Saturday as part of the attempt, with help from players from the Southland Sharks and Pearls basketball teams,.
Southland YMCA Recreation on Tay St had opened to the public and it was a day for bringing families together, Mr Hubscher said.
