A man has died in an accident near the Homer Tunnel, in Fiordland.

St John South Island region communications and promotions coordinator Alena Lynch said a 65-year-old man was killed in the industrial accident, which involved a compressed air hose - a hose that blasted air, instead of water.

He suffered a massive head injury in the incident but did not die immediately, she said.

"We'd sent the helicopter to him before he did die, but somebody was doing CPR on him so it was life threatening right from the outset."

She believed the incident happened at a workplace but did not know any more details, she said.

The matter had been handed over to police.

No other details are available yet.
