The Met Service has issued a severe weather warning for Fiordland.
The warning says a moist north-easterly flow is expected to affect Fiordland on Thursday and on Friday morning the flow is likely to strengthen as a front approaches from the south-west.
The rain is expected to be heaviest from early Friday morning to late Friday afternoon when intensities could reach 20 to 30mm an hour at times about the fiords.
The rain should ease late on Friday as the front moves away to the north-east.
People in this area are advised to look out for rapidly rising rivers and streams, slips and surface flooding, especially during Friday when the most intense rain is expected.
A gale warning has also been issued for Foxeaux Strait.
