The body of an 83-year-old Roxburgh woman was found in the Clutha River this afternoon after a search and rescue was conducted for the missing woman.
Central Otago sub area commander senior sergeant Ian Kerrisk said police were notified that the woman was missing after midday and a search began at 12.45pm.
The woman's body was recovered from the Clutha River shortly before 3pm.
The search involved police, search and rescue personnel, coastguard, the Roxburgh and Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigades, and members of the Roxburgh community including the missing woman's neighbours and friends.
It was believed the woman may have been missing since last night .
Police have referred the matter to the coroner.
It is likely the woman's name will be released later today.
