A woman has died after her car hit a poplar tree in the Wakatipu basin this morning.
Acting Sergeant Terry Wood said emergency services were contacted at 6.55am and it is believed the crash on Malaghans Rd happened shortly before then.
The woman is believed to have died instantly. She was a foreign national who possibly worked in the area and was driving a private car toward Arrowtown.
"For unknown reasons she has drifted off the road. She has possibly attempted to take corrective action, has swerved and hit poplar trees," Mr Wood said.
The police serious crash unit from Alexandra was investigating and Malaghans Rd would probably remain closed all day.
The closure is between Hunter and Dalefield roads.
