Thief gets off with dozens of trees
Somebody is stealing trees in Winton.
"Quite a few hundred dollars' worth" of young trees had been stolen from roadsides in the area last weekend, between 7.30pm on Friday and 6am on Saturday, Constable Dave Blanks said yesterday.
Thirty-two trees were stolen from outside a farm on the Lochiel-Branxholme Rd, while 20 more had been pulled from the soil outside the new Central Southland Freight premises, "just down the road" on the Winton-Lorneville highway, mere hours after the garden was completed.
"[The transport company] had only finished landscaping on the Friday and they were stolen the Friday night."
Mr Blanks said it was the first time he had heard of trees being stolen in the town.
"Somebody's obviously got a new house or a new place and they're trying to landscape it," he said.
Anybody with information about the theft should contact the Winton police or call the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555111.
