Invercargill get top award for caring
City couple honouredGWYNETH HYNDMAN
Marianne and Cyril Double have fostered more than 30 children since they opened their home 22 years ago.
The Doubles were one of 10 New Zealand couples honoured from by Social Development Minister Paula Bennett at a ceremony in Wellington last Friday, part of Foster Care Awareness Week.
Family Works fostercare co-ordinator Maree Sellars said she nominated the couple because of their enthusiasm and eagerness to provide the best care possible for every child that came into their home.
The Doubles were humble about the work they were doing, she said.
Mrs Double said it was as simple as seeing the potential in every child. Everyone had a right to grow up in a safe, loving environment.
Mrs Bennett said foster carers provided a safe home for children who needed it most, usually in a time of crisis, and have played a critical role in their lives.
