A 53-year-old woman was taken by helicopter to Southland Hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the Ohai-Nightcaps Highway this morning.
St John South Island region communications and promotions coordinater Alena Lynch said the woman was trapped in the vehicle, after the crash just before noon.
A Southern Police Communications spokesman said St John had reported that a van rolled at 11.35am and one person is trapped inside.
At 12.25pm, the spokesman said the fire service was on the scene and a helicopter was in the air and flying to the crash scene from Te Anau.
Police senior sergeant Dave Raynes, of Invercargill, said the person trapped in the van had serious arm and leg injuries.
The fire service is using the jaws of life equipment to try and get to the person in the vehicle, he said.
The road has been closed while the rescue operation continues.
