The $3 million Southern Chair of Neurosurgery campaign has only $128,000 to go, following a successful week of fundraising.
Campaign manager Irene Mosley said the new total of $2,871,993 came from a Night at the Races event in Dunedin last Friday, which raised more than $48,000, plus a $7000 donation from the Wyndham Lions, which raised the money through a baleage competition this year.
A cheque was presented to Mrs Mosley last Wednesday when she spoke to about 50 members at a club meeting.
The Lions District 202F - which includes the Wyndham branch - has raised more than $100,000 for the campaign since it was launched in January.
The $3 million was just a goal, and any funds over that amount would ensure the endowment fund was "future-proofed," Mrs Mosley said.
