Police are continuing to interview witnesses after a 17-year-old was shot while hunting on a Southland farm during the early hours of Monday morning.

The victim and associates were spotlighting for deer, using a vehicle on a farm near Orepuki, in Western Southland.

The teen underwent surgery and is recovering in the Southland Hospital after being shot and injured by a hunting companion, police said.

Detective Dougall Henderson, of Invercargill, said police were hoping to complete preliminary investigations in the coming days.

''We are speaking to a few more witnesses and people who were present at the incident,'' he said.

Mr Henderson said once police had spoken to all the witnesses a decision would be made whether to lay charges.

Investigators from Invercargill's criminal investigation unit carried out a scene examination at the site of the shooting, and the members of the hunting group were helping police with their inquiries, Mr Henderson said.

The name of the injured hunter would not be released until the completion of the investigation, Mr Henderson said.
