Police have named the 82-year-old man killed in a head-on crash in South Otago on Tuesday.
He was Neville Westbrooke Squires, of Riverton.
A 26-year-old Singaporean national appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday on a charge of dangerous driving causing death. He was remanded in custody to appear again today. Police say more charges are likely.
Senior Sergeant Richard Whitmore said initial inquiries into the cause of the crash at Kuriwao, near Clinton, indicated the driver of a northbound Toyota SUV, overtaking a truck, travelled into the path of an oncoming car.
The driver of the southbound car, in which Mr Squires was a front-seat passenger, and three passengers from the SUV remain in Dunedin Hospital.
Balclutha police are keen to talk to the driver of the large truck that was being overtaken in the incident. It was described as red with silver trim, with a solid back and double doors.
Police have also appealed for information from motorists in the area about 1.20pm, who may have seen a gold Toyota RAV or a truck fitting the above description.
Anyone with information should contact Balclutha police or the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
