About 200 children gathered at Ascot Community School to mark a book day today.

They gathered in the schoool's playground to parade in their luau, Hawaiian-themed costumes for Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt.

The children spent more than a month transforming their library into a beach themed haven.

The children made cut outs of beach and sea themed items to decorate the walls.

Little Isobel said she had a lot of fun decorating the library.

''Three days every week, all the classes made something to put on the walls. It looks great,'' she said.
