Two people were injured and a tanker truck blocked traffic for two hours on the Gore-Mataura highway after it was involved in a collision  with a Toyota Landcruiser at 4pm today.

Police said the diesel-fuelled truck's container was empty, but feared it could explode.

The truck and the car were left about 200 metres apart on the same side of the road following the crash.

Gore police Sergeant Sharee Lietze said two Gore men in the Landcruiser, aged 39 and 19, suffered minor injuries.

Police were investigating, but alcohol was not involved, she said.
