Innovative architectural designs in Queenstown and Central Otago have been awarded regional accolades.

The Southern Architecture awards were announced at a gala in Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin, last night.

Of seven projects, two were in Queenstown, one in Arrowtown and a fourth in Lake Hawea.

Kerr Ritchie's citation for a house in Dublin St, Queenstown, said well designed stairs deftly connected levels of the cleverly grouped elements in the main building.

The Arrow Private Hotel in Queenstown, designed by Assembly Architects, Arrowtown House by Crosson Clarke Carnachan Chin and Lake Hawea Courtyard House by Glamuzina Paterson, also won awards.

Judges said the Lake Hawea house was economical with its use of seconds bricks coated in a thin skim of plaster.

"The house and its sheltering walls ride the rolling site at the foot of Mt Maude like a boat in a medium swell."

Winners will be entered in the national New Zealand Architectural Awards next year.
