The small community of Glenorchy celebrated another milestone yesterday with the opening of the extension of the popular lagoon boardwalk track.
About 60 people turned out to celebrate the opening of the extension before walking the new section and enjoying a barbecue at the end. The $315,000 extension was undertaken as part of the town's 150th anniversary celebrations and added 1.7 kilometres to the popular track.
The trail, which begins at the lakefront and traverses a wetland area immediately north of the township, is already being used by more than 18,000 people annually.
Glenorchy Walkway committee member Amanda Hasselman said they were thankful to the Conservation Department which had given a large amount of resources to the project.
"The project has been a huge one for our small community to undertake, and we are extremely proud of that result and of the way the community has really pulled together to make this project happen," she said.
