The Chair of Neurosurgery campaign has only $63,503.19 to go before the $3 million goal is reached.
The announcement comes just 10 months after the campaign to retain the neurosurgery unit for the south was launched.
The $3m allows the position of a chair for the unit to be funded indefinitely, regardless of changes in government health policies.
Campaign manager Irene Mosley said it was certain the target of $3 million would be passed before Christmas.
The latest donation from the Dunedin Casino Trust of $50,000 led to the new total of $2,936,496.81 this week.
