Residents of Queenstown who have been waiting up to two years for missing mail will finally have some of it delivered on Sunday.

New Zealand Post will deliver a large quantity of the mail recovered by police at the home and commercial storage unit of a 32-year-old female postie who was arrested and charged with theft earlier this month. The woman has name suppression and is scheduled to appear in Queenstown District Court on Monday.

NZ Post said this morning police will release up to 17,000 unopened letters and parcels, which have been catalogued for evidential purposes, for delivery to the residents of Fernhill, Sunshine Bay, Arrowtown and Lake Hayes.

A smaller quantity of opened mail will be retained by police for further investigations.

Mail will be delivered by uniformed posties who will go door-to-door between 9am and 5pm on Sunday.

Posties will only visit properties for which recovered mail had been addressed.

At addresses where the occupants are home the postie will request names of all current occupants to ensure items intended for previous occupants are not delivered to old addresses.

Items addressed to current occupants will be delivered and those accepting mail will have to give proof of identification, preferably photo identification, and sign a form recording the number of items received. If the occupants are not home on Sunday postal staff will leave a card with contact details to arrange an alternate time for delivery.

All mail that cannot be delivered on Sunday, including items addressed to former occupants, will be returned to NZ Post's Queenstown delivery branch for follow up action.

New Zealand Post said it would use all available resources to locate intended recipients, including any who no longer reside in the area.
